Microfluidics Theory and Simulation at MIC

The microfluidics theory and simulation group (MIFTS) at MIC, DTU, has since its beginning in 2002 developed into a mature research group that has taken up a wide range of theoretical problems in microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip technology. In the talk I will give an overview of this work with focus on biological applications such as dielectrophoretic handling of cells, mangetophoretic handling of magnetic bio-coated microspheres and topology optimization of transport of nutrients to cell cultures.

Bundlevende dyr (f.eks. muslinger), som skaffer sig føde ved at filtrere store mængder vand for suspenderede phytoplankton partikler, er afhængige af en god opblanding af vandet som følge af strøm og bølger. Ellers tømmer de blot de bundnære vandmasser for føde og må sulte. Det hjælper dog at de selv bidrager til opblandingen (biomixing), idet det filtrerede vand sendes bort som kraftige stråler. De fremlagte resultater viser indflydelsen af biomixing for såvel stillestående vand som for turbulent strømning over en muslingebanke.
The role of differential diffusion for the atherosclerotic process

Atherosclerosis is a very common disease and is the cause of death in about half of the cases. Historically, one may find a number of plausible explanations for the formation and the development of atherosclerosis. Most of these theories are based on the bio-chemistry of certain compounds. In popular terms, one talks about "good" and "bad" fats. However, monitoring the levels of blood fats is inadequate as a prognostic parameter, simply because simple chemistry cannot explain the processes related atherosclerosis. The presentation gives a short background to some theories related to atherosclerosis and the relevance of fluid mechanics to this process. We shall also consider the effects of differential diffusion for atherogenesis.

Bier anvender danse til at meddele, i hvilken retning og afstand der mangler samlebier, og de andre bier kan aflæse budskabet og finde frem, selvom det er mørkt i bistadet, og dansen er meget vild. Jetstrømme lavet af danseren synes at formidle budskabet med den nødvendige præcision.
