DANSIS 10 year anniversary symposium

The symposium will celebrate the 10 Year Anniversary of DANSIS. The framework of the symposium will create an extraordinary possibility of meeting colleagues from the fluid mechanics society in Denmark. The hope is that the venue will enable the participants to share experiences and acquire new competences.

The symposium will cover two parallel tracks:

Track 1: Open Source CFD – Getting Started

There is a genuine and growing interest in using open source CFD codes in the fluid mechanics society in Denmark. This was recently demonstrated at the full-day DANSIS meeting in October 2007 at DTU. Subsequently, several initiatives, such as the present, to increase the use of open source CFD have been initiated. OpenFOAM is currently the most used open source code and it will be used in the symposium track. In DANSIS, we would like to support the increasing use of open source CFD codes, which we find will facilitate cooperation in the group of DANSIS members.

The open source CFD track will start with two introductory sessions. The first will focus on providing an OpenFOAM code overview, whereas the second session contains code demonstration followed by hands-on cases. The third session is a case session, where setting up an internal flow case will be used for hands-on training. The fourth session focuses on OpenFOAM advanced features, validation and future developments.

The Open source CFD track contains demonstrated examples. Participants are requested to bring their own laptop computer to follow these examples using a live OpenFOAM/Linux installation provided on a bootable USB memory stick

Track 2: Research and education in fluid mechanics in Denmark

The intention with this track is to formulate a DANSIS vision for future research and education in fluid mechanics in Denmark. Stakeholders from the research and educational environment are invited together with stakeholder from Danish industry to contribute to formulation of this strategy. It is the intention to stimulate stronger cooperation between research and educational institutions in Denmark as well as stimulating the cooperation between academia and industry. It is the hope that apart from formulation of the DANSIS Charter of Research and Education in Fluid Mechanics, the basis for forming specific research consortia will be created as a result of the Anniversary Symposium.

Each participant in the symposium will give a short (1-2 minutes) oral presentation of his or her activities and experiences in fluid mechanics.

14.00 Track 1: OpenFOAM introduction: Overview

The first introduction session covers an overview of the OpenFOAM software. An easy installation method based on a bootable USB memory stick will be presented, followed by navigation of the installed files, including searching through available solvers and utility applications. Users will be given an overview of OpenFOAM case setup and mesh description.
14.00 Track 2: Research and education activities (I)

This first of two sessions covers current research and educational activities at Danish universities and research institutions. Presentations will be made by the following:

15.45 Track 1: Introduction continued: Demonstration and Hands-on

The second introduction session focuses on setting up analyses in OpenFOAM and
will be hands-on. The users will be guided through some simple example cases
involving mesh generation and pre-processing, solver selection and
execution, and post-processing using ParaView. The control of time step,
data writing, discretisation schemes and solver parameters will be
demonstrated by example, along with the most useful OpenFOAM utilities.
15.45 Track 2: Research and education activities (II)

The third session is a case session, where setting up an internal flow case will be used for hands-on training. The case will cover different applications and will demonstrate how to convert a commercial code problem setup to OpenFOAM.

13.00 Track 1: OpenFOAM advanced features, validation and future developments

The final session will focus on user-programming of OpenFOAM. The language of
OpenFOAM, C++, will be briefly described to demonstrate how to find OpenFOAM functionality and use it in customised code. The source code for a typical solver will be explained and users can participate in making simple changes to a solver. Users will be given a crash course in adding a boundary condition, transport model and turbulence model. The future plans for the OpenFOAM code will be discussed. Finally, the session will be rounded off evaluating the need for setting up an informal DANSIS OpenFOAM user network.
13.00 Track 2: Discussion on possible future national research initiatives

This will conclude on the presentation from research and educational institutions together with the company presentations. The goal will be to formulate the DANSIS national research charter on Fluid Dynamics.

The symposium fee is DKK 1950,- for members of DANSIS and includes accommodation and meals. If you or your company are not a member, an addtional fee of DKK 1000,- will be charged
